Energy Estuary 2.0 is backed by 40 high-profile businesses and the University of Hull

A £36m bid has been submitted to make the Humber region a "global testbed" for green energy innovation and create 10,000 new jobs over the next decade.

The so-called Energy Estuary 2.0 initiative is being backed by 40 high-profile businesses and organisations under the leadership of the University of Hull.

It would involve exploring ground-breaking new ways of producing clean energy.

Under the plan, a number of pilot projects would be tested by local industry using new technologies with the aim of reducing harmful emissions.

One of the ideas is to build a £12m power station that could provide shared low-cost heating, cooling and electricity to homes and businesses instead of taking energy from the National Grid.

Others include a mobile unit capable of capturing carbon emissions from polluting industrial sites and the production of a range of clean fuels using non-recyclable plastic and even waste water.
