When should you follow-up on a job application?

In some job advertisements it will have details of when interviews might be or when decisions will be made. However, most will just have a closing date. It is tempting to start getting anxious as soon as that date passes wondering whether you will hear anything from them about whether your application has been successful.

It can be tempting to start following things up quickly, but what do people think should be the right amount of time to chase up an application?

As I said before, I would never follow one up as I would just assume that I hadn't got the job. Maybe I am being too negative! It would be interesting to see if there are any examples out there of people that have followed up and then been offered the job.
